REQUEST FROM POLICE SCOTLAND FOR WITNESSES

This is for anyone who was at the African Caribbean Centre on Friday 29th November, the night that the Helicopter crashed onto the roof of The Clutha. 

The incident happened at 2225hrs and Police Scotland are keen to identify any witnesses to the incident or anyone who saw the helicopter immediately before it.

The police say the helicopter passed over King St Car Park just outside our premises. Therefore anyone standing outside at that time is likely to have useful information. 

PLEASE NOTE this is an appeal ONLY for people who SAW the helicopter. Please only come forward if you actually SAW it.

Friday 29th Jerry Dammers from The Specials is our DJ!!!

Yes you heard right, the legendary Jerry Dammers from The Specials is our guest DJ at the Jamaican SKA night on Friday 29^th November. He’ll be supported by emerging Glasgow ska band The Mitre 5s. Jerry has many feathers to his bow. He is responsible for the two tone British ska although these days (and on Friday night) he concentrates on the real rootsy ska music from Jamaica.

He’s also the man who penned “Free Nelson Mandela” as in “Free-ee-ee Nelson Mandela”, an unforgettable tribute to someone who features on most people’s ‘heroes list’ J

Anyway, our excitement is making us ramble.

The ticket allocation is limited. If you’ve never been to the African Caribbean Centre we’re a comparatively intimate venue on the edge of the Merchant City. Intimate means you’ll get up close to the man himself. But it also means you have to be quick to get your tickets. We’ve tried to keep it as affordable as possible for everyone but that could also mean tickets go fast.

So, you can buy your tickets at The Guitar Store on Argyle Street or Tickets Scotland also on Argyle Street in Glasgow. Or you can follow this Eventbrite link and buy online. Choosing any of these options will cost you just 8 pounds.

We’re keeping back 30 tickets for selling on the door on the night and they will be ten pounds each.

Outdoor Art comes to a window near you!

31st October - 4th November

PICTURE WINDOW is an on-going public art project based in Glasgow that temporarily transforms shop front spaces with contemporary art practice directed at the street, turning the city into a gallery for New Media Art.

SONICA is a programme dedicated to world-class sonic arts, presenting emerging British talent alongside exceptional international artists in collaboration with renowned co-producers and venues. Curated by Cathie Boyd, Patrick Dickie and Graham McKenzie, Sonica gives a UK platform to performances of exceptional and rarely-seen work.

We are one of the windows in question.

CONDUCTING COMMODITIES by Thomas Leyland-Collins. 66/68 Osborne Street, The African Caribbean Centre. 31st October - 4th November, midday - midnight. Creating a sense of nostalgia through the use of bygone jingles and advertisements, Conducting Commodities examines the role of sound in advertising, as visitors are encouraged to interact with a window display of salvaged television sets.

Hallowe'en and we're all still zombied ...

Look at the impressive array of artists and DJs helping us see out Black History Month with a Hallowe'en Party we reckon you'll remember for a long long time! Five pounds to get in. Doors open 7pm till 2am. 

Having had time to go out ourselves recently, we've discovered that our bar prices are really good value. Should we put them up? No, we'll just keep providing a really great atmospheric venue and an affordable night out! Don't say we're not good to you :-)

I Have a Dream will be our theme this October

Marking 50 years since Martin Luther King Jr made 'that' speech

50 years ago today Dr Martin Luther King Jr addressed a 250,000 strong crowd who had marched on Washington to fight for jobs and an end to segregation. The speech he made has become one of the most memorable in history and is commonly referred to as his "I Have a Dream" speech for obvious reasons.

The African and Caribbean Network has decided that October, Black History Month will be devoted to honouring his legacy. The theme for the month will be "I Have a Dream" and every event will tap into people's hopes wishes and dreams.

The full programme will be published in the next few weeks but is likely to include:

* Martin Luther King Jr exhibition of words and images;

* Cabaret showcase of African and Caribbean talent;

* Eritrean Human Rights Public Meeting;

* South African night marking 20 years since Nelson Mandela came to Glasgow;

Africa's Alive & Kicking Party

Meantime, don't miss this Friday's tribute to Martin Luther King. African artists from hip hop to reggae will be performing in tribute to the great man. More information here.

Basement Techno at the ACC

Techno is what's happening this Friday night in the Basement of the ACC. 10pm to 2am. Get there before midnight or you'll have to pay 3 pounds in. Before that it's only 2 pounds leaving you more money to spend at our very reasonably priced bar. The crowd that comes to this night are lovely, it's a great atmosphere, you are guaranteed to enjoy!

Eritrea - the horrors being visited on its people

This Saturday 6th July, the ACC will host a political conference starting at 5pm. The conference is organised by the Eritrean Youth Solidarity for National Salvation (EYSNS) and the aim is to raise awareness of the 'horrific situation our people are going through both home and abroad as they try to escape the tyrannical rule'. 

This youth led event is open to anyone interested in the issues and they are hoping for sympathisers to advocate, lobby and campaign alongside them. 5pm at the ACC, 66 Osborne Street, Glasgow, G1 5QH.

African & Caribbean Network at the West End Festival Mardi Gras Parade

Sunday 9th June was a fabulous day for the A&CN. We had a small but colourful and lively group who made costumes and took part in the parade. And it was all thanks to Noel Bridgeman, a great friend of the A&CN and producer of the parade and Isabel the fabulous art workers. Next year we'll have 5 times as many of us on it. Liberation themed Open Mic Night

This Saturday is African Liberation Day and we will be holding our AGM. That night to celebrate we will be staging an open mic night and the theme is Liberation. 

It starts at 8pm and we would encourage you to come early because it's also Eritrean Independence Day and we are expecting many Eritrean friends will join our celebrations.

You can look forward to some fantastic Eritrean entertainment and some of our regular open mic contributors including:

Two floors of music, clootie dumplings, cocktails and the friendliest door and bar staff in Glasgow. And of course the sensational sounds of Bass Warrior. This guy, originally from Montserrat, just wants to keep the culture alive, just wants to share the music. Why else would he only be charging a fiver to get in on Hogmanay?

Fri 5 Oct - Proud of Black History themed Open Mic Night

Popular demand has got us bringing back the cabaret style open mic night. If you’re a poet, can sing, play an instrument, dance, make us laugh or just fancy watching everyone else do all of that, you are welcome to come to this fun event. Performances should be on the theme ‘Proud of Black History’ although we’ll still cheer you on if it’s not.
