What's on at the African Caribbean Centre?

If you're looking for a night with a difference at a venue with a difference, you've come to the right place.

We are currently putting together our events programme for the ACC for 2013 but it will include:

Reggae Nights

Traditional African Nights

Open Mic Nights

Some interesting After Show Parties

and new for 2013

Soul Sister Nights

Ska Nights

We'll also have the usual helping of film screenings, political debates, book launches and discussions. And all of that is to raise money to carry on the community work of the African Caribbean Network.

How else you can use the centre?

We need volunteers for a variety of jobs.

We hire out the space for meetings, workshops, film screenings and parties.

The barber shop in the basement is open 7 days a week - all haircuts are five pounds.

The African Caribbean Cafe will be opening soon.

So, keep checking for information - or send your email to accglasgow@gmail.com and we'll put you on the mailing list. Whatever you do, don't miss out on the venue that's been described as 'a hidden gem' or nights which one first timer told us was 'the most buzzed up night of my life' (and he was sober!). 

Remember, you don't have to be African or Caribbean to come to the ACC - everyone is welcome and we can always teach you how :-) Seriously, we have a great mix of regulars, you will be made to feel very welcome.

Happy 100th Birthday Rosa Parks

'The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.'

This amazing woman changed the course of history and everyone involved with the African Caribbean Centre owes her a huge debt of gratitude. In fact, our Christmas cards last year featured Rosa Parks. For those who don't know she is the woman, a seamstress, who got sick and tired of being treated like a second class citizen simply because of the colour of her skin and decided to stand up to a bus driver who told her she had to give up her seat to a white man. That lead to a long boycott of the bus company in question and that in turn was one of the events that sparked off the civil rights movement.

Here's an interesting piece from Democracy Now about how Rosa Parks is often portrayed as a comic book heroine who was just too tired and a bit rebellious on that particular day. In fact Rosa Parks was a strong and long term civil rights campaigner. Let's all take a moment today to be thankful to her and those like her and remember her legacy on what would have been her 100th birthday.

Where did January go?

Well happy new year everyone and Happy Martin Luther King day a couple of weeks ago. We decided not to do events in January and we thought it would give us loads of time to develop the charity's services but we're not entirely sure where the month went to!

However we have been working away on the events and we'll be posting some up shortly. Before we do, please let everyone you know, know that we are available for hire. If you're looking for somewhere a bit different to have your birthday / engagement / going away party or you are a promoter looking for a venue to promote your music, get in touch and we'll see what we can do. We generally need six weeks' notice for licensed events but it's still worth asking. Email Anne on accglasgow@gmail.com and I'll call you / email you or meet up with you - whatever suits you.

You can also hire space for meetings and workshops and for that we need 2 weeks notice preferably. And shortly we'll be opening the revamped ACC Cafe so watch this space.

We've also got a project starting up to vamp up the ACC. We've listened very carefully to our regulars and you do not want us to do it up too much. You like the 'basicness' of it apparently and we know what you mean, we like it too. So we're simply looking at ways of keeping the atmosphere but making it more African and Caribbean and also making it more suitable for hire for workshops and meetings. We'll also look at the best solution re heating the venue. So, if you have any ideas, would like to get involved with the project group get in touch - Anne accglasgow@gmail.com

African actors needed in Edinburgh and Glasgow in May

We've had a request from a film student for African actors. Here's what he had to say.

“The Red Marble” tells the story of Foday, a seemingly unassuming black African man in his 30s, who is robbed at gunpoint by a troubled American teen named Mel. Foday, it turns out, is a former child soldier and as he desperately tries to connect with a very unwilling Mel, ends up confronting his own devastating memories of a childhood lost.

This is an ECA Masters short film project being shot in Edinburgh & Glasgow in May for 5-6 days. We are actively seeking someone for the role of Foday. The script was written with Sierra Leone in mind but the story asks greater questions about war and its long-term effects on youth so we are open to casting a man in his 30s from other areas of Africa as well.
