Winter Ceilidh to raise funds for destitute asylum seekers

QUICK UPDATE - THIS EVENT HAS NOW HAPPENED AND THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT BETWEEN US WE MANAGED TO RAISE OVER SEVEN HUNDRED POUNDS FOR THE DESTITUTION APPEAL SO THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME, IT MEANT AN AWFUL LOT TO THE GCIN AND TO OURSELVES.

Govan and Craigton Integration Network in partnership with the African and Caribbean Centre presents a fundraising event for GCIN's Destitution Project, to provide food parcels and winter bus passes to people who are destitute.

A critical aspect of their work is giving out food packages and bus passes to people who are destitute. The funding for this scheme – which operates once a week from the Pearce Institute – has now run out but there is still a great need for the service.

One group that benefits from the f

ood package scheme is destitute asylum seekers. Many refused asylum seekers become destitute because, currently, financial support and accommodation for asylum seekers is revoked 21 days after a claim for asylum is refused, forcing many into homelessness as they do not have the right to work. Limited and unreliable support is available only if the claimant agrees to return to their country of origin voluntarily which is often a difficult process as well as being a terrifying prospect for those who come from war torn regions where human rights abuses are commonplace.

Although their food package scheme cannot alter the reality of destitution it can help alleviate some of the anxiety and suffering that these people experience. Therefore, it is essential that we continue to provide this much needed service.

It is in aid of this scheme that they are having their Winter Ceilidh in partnership with us, the African and Caribbean Centre on Friday, 2nd November so come along and show your support!
